Session overview

This session will assess how DLT, tokenisation and AI are expected to transform post-trading activities, the progress and practical benefits achieved so far, the conditions for their large-scale deployment, whether the current EU regulatory framework and related policy initiatives are sufficient or whether further measures are needed to support their scaling, and how the EU approach compares with developments in other jurisdictions.

Points of discussion

1. Uptake of new technologies in securities post-trading

How are DLT, tokenisation and AI progressing in the securities post-trading environment and what are the realistic prospects for their broader adoption in the short to medium term? To what extent can these technologies improve the efficiency, automation and integration of post-trading activities? What are the main conditions for their large-scale deployment and the key challenges that remain to be addressed? Could the wider use of DLT, tokenisation and AI create additional fragmentation or dependencies in European post-trading?

2. Regulatory and policy framework

To what extent does the current EU financial and digital regulatory framework create the conditions for the large-scale deployment of DLT, tokenisation and AI in the post-trading space? What improvements are expected from the MISP framework and from Eurosystem initiatives such as Pontes and Appia in this regard? Are additional initiatives needed to support the broader adoption of these technologies and avoid new forms of fragmentation? How does the EU approach in this area compare with other jurisdictions?
