Objectives

Objectives

This session will take stock of recent developments in cryptoasset markets and the first lessons from the implementation of the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA), in a context of evolving international approaches and renewed market volatility. It will also assess the outlook for crypto markets and whether additional policy or supervisory measures may be needed to support their safe development in Europe, as well enhanced international coordination.

Points of discussion

  1. Stock-taking of policy developments in the EU and international crypto space
What are the main lessons emerging from the first phase of MiCA implementation in the EU, notably regarding authorisation, supervisory convergence and the end of transition regimes? What tangible benefits has MiCA delivered so far? Are practical challenges or regulatory gaps becoming apparent as implementation progresses? How could developments in the international regulatory landscape affect the EU crypto market?
  2. Future market and policy evolutions
What are the development prospects for crypto markets in the EU and globally over the coming years? What does the latest volatility episode reveal about the maturity, resilience and growth potential of today’s crypto markets? What regulatory or supervisory evolutions may be required to address remaining gaps in MiCA and to respond to the increasing scale, cross-border nature and interconnectedness of crypto markets? Is stronger international regulatory consistency needed as the global crypto ecosystem evolves?
