Session overview

Objectives

The roundtable will examine whether Europe is agile enough and on track to build a genuinely integrated, and sovereign payment single market, and what additional steps may be needed from both public and private actors. It will explore how the different regulatory and infrastructure initiatives fit together in terms of timing and strategic direction, how European-scale solutions can be fostered without stifling competition or innovation, how incumbent banks and payment systems can adapt to shifting value pools and AI-driven market change, and how fraud and resilience challenges can be addressed in a way that strengthens trust among European citizens and businesses. The discussion should help clarify whether the current combination of SEPA, instant payments, Wero, EuroPA, the digital euro and evolving regulatory frameworks is enough to move the EU from a harmonised but still fragmented landscape towards a truly effective payment single market.

Points of discussion

  1. Where is the EU Payment Single Market Heading? Is the EU on track to achieve a truly integrated, sovereign, and competitive payment single market?

  2. Sovereignty, AI/Fraud, and Evolving Business Models: How can Europe address sovereignty, fraud, and business model challenges to build a resilient and competitive single market?
