Objectives

This session will examine how the European asset management sector can contribute more effectively to the development of the Savings and Investments Union (SIU). Panellists will discuss the main trends shaping the EU asset management sector and its competitiveness compared with other jurisdictions, the opportunities it offers for supporting long-term investment, and the key regulatory, supervisory, and structural challenges that may limit its growth and contribution to the SIU. The debate will also address the policy priorities needed to unlock the sector’s potential, including the expected impact of recent fund framework reviews (AIFMD, UCITS, ELTIF), the measures proposed in the SIU Strategy, and whether additional changes are needed to foster a more competitive and integrated EU fund market.

Points of discussion

  • Main trends, opportunities and challenges: What are the most significant trends currently shaping the European asset management sector, and how is its competitiveness evolving compared to other jurisdictions?
  • What opportunities does the sector offer to support the objectives of the SIU?
  • What are the main obstacles hindering the growth and competitiveness of the EU asset management sector, and how do they affect its ability to contribute to the SIU?
  • Policy priorities for strengthening the role of funds in the SIU: To what extent will the recent reviews of EU fund frameworks contribute to the growth, integration and competitiveness of the European asset management sector?
  • What additional regulatory or supervisory measures may be needed to further integrate and scale up the EU fund sector, and are these sufficiently reflected in the SIU Strategy?
  • Can the development of savings and investment accounts and supplementary pensions increase the role of investment funds in the SIU and how should fund managers adapt to fully seize these opportunities?
