Objectives

This session will first discuss the state of long-term retail investment in Europe, the main potential drivers for developing retail engagement in capital markets and the challenges to be overcome. In a second round, panellists will assess the main actions proposed in the Commission’s SIU Strategy to channel retail savings into productive investment, in particular the proposals to develop private pension products and to promote best practices in savings and investment accounts. The potential need to further enhance or complete product frameworks or to create product labels will also be touched on.

Points of discussion

  • Main issues and challenges to address for developing long-term retail investment: What is the status of long-term retail investment in the EU? What are the main challenges to be overcome?
  • Actions and priorities for increasing long term retail investment: What are the main priorities at the product level for developing retail investment in Europe? What impact is expected from the SIU Strategy measures regarding private pensions and savings & investment accounts? Can more be done in terms of product frameworks or labelling to promote long-term retail investment?
