Objectives

The objective of this session is to discuss the role of the asset management sector in the SIU. The panel will first assess the main trends in the European asset management sector, the opportunities and challenges facing the sector and the potential contribution of the asset management sector to the achievement of the SIU. In a second round of discussion, the panellists will evaluate the expected impacts of the reviews of the EU fund frameworks adopted during the previous legislature and of the measures proposed in the SIU Strategy to further develop the asset management sector, and discuss whether additional policy measures are needed. The role of digitalisation in enhancing the competitiveness of the EU fund sector will also be addressed.

Points of discussion

  • Main trends, opportunities and challenges: What are the main trends and opportunities in the European asset management sector? How important is the asset management sector for achieving the objectives of the SIU? Are there major issues or obstacles to overcome in this perspective?
  • Policy priorities: What impact can be expected from the adopted reviews of existing fund frameworks and are additional measures needed related to fund frameworks? Do the SIU Strategy proposals take sufficient account of the opportunities offered by asset management for the development of EU capital markets? What role can technology play?
