The session will focus on clarifying the issues at stake and the respective success factors, depending on the different types of cross border payment transactions (i.e., C2C, B2C, B2B, …). In particular, the session will aim at discussing what would be the best options to significantly improve the situation of each type of cross border payment, notably by assessing the opportunities offered by the improvement of existing arrangements and those leveraging emerging technologies.

Finally, the session will discuss the evolutions that regulation and supervision require at the international level, in order to match the expectations triggered by the deep overhaul of the cross-border payment landscape. One has on mind in particular the need for enabling further interoperability, integration, and cooperation, in the areas of international payment infrastructures and macro-financial issues, should notably CBDCs be leveraged for improving cross border payments.

Points of discussion

  1. What are the issues at stake in the area of cross border payments? What are the focus areas and key success factors required in order to deliver the expected progress in the projected timeframe?
