The session is intended to clarify and prioritise the main challenges to be addressed by EU level retail payment infrastructures and schemes, and finally, discuss the adaptation-approaches, which maximise competition, innovation, and cooperation in the EU, and will enable EU public and private stakeholders to successfully contribute to the EU retail payment strategy. In particular, the respective contribution to this Strategy, of the European Central Bank, TIPS, the European Payment Council, EPI will be clarified, as will be the necessary evolutions the EU retail payment and competition regulatory framework. 

Points of discussion

  1. What are the main challenges to be addressed in the area of retail payment? What are the structural changes illustrated in this respect by the big initiatives witnessed in this area? What are the expected short and middle term benefits targeted by these initiatives?  
  2. What are the adaptation-approaches, which are available to EU public and private stakeholders and related priorities?
