Objectives
The objective of this session is first to discuss the opportunities and challenges facing the CEE region in terms of economic growth and financing model, and how growth prospects are expected to evolve in the coming years. The discussion will focus more on structural factors (e.g. related to the region’s growth model, the availability of skills, the structure of financing in the region, the ability to take advantage of the digital and green transitions…), but the specific challenges posed to the CEE region by the geopolitical context (Russia-Ukraine war, change of US administration) and the short-term macroeconomic environment (inflation, interest rates…) may also be touched upon. Second, the panel will discuss the adjustments that may be needed to the region’s growth and financing model in the future, the expected impact in the region of key EU initiatives (such as SIU and NGEU) and regional actions (such as the Vienna Initiative, use of the TSI instrument…) and assess further actions that may be needed to support the growth and competitiveness of the CEE economies.
Points of discussion
- Opportunities and challenges for the CEE region growth model: What are the key structural challenges facing the CEE region in terms of economic growth and financial model? What other challenges does the current geopolitical and macroeconomic context pose? What are the key opportunities that CEE should seek to exploit? What are the expected implications of the ongoing enlargement process for the CEE countries already in the EU?
- Policy priorities for adjusting the CEE growth model: What changes are needed in the CEE growth and financing model and what are the related policy objectives? Can they be implemented with current EU and regional policy initiatives? What further actions might be needed at EU or regional level?
