Objectives

The objective of this session is to provide an overview of the current state of digitalisation in the EU financial sector and to identify the key policy priorities for the current European political cycle to support its further development. It will set the stage for a series of sessions later in the day that will explore in greater detail the trends and policy implications of specific technologies, including AI, tokenisation, DLT, cryptoassets, and open finance, as well as challenges related to cyber and digital operational resilience. The discussion will begin by taking stock of the progress made in digitalising EU financial services, the opportunities ahead, and the main operational and regulatory challenges that may hinder further advancement. The panel will then consider how effectively existing EU digital and financial policy frameworks support this transformation. It will also explore what further adjustments or additions may be needed to streamline and enhance the digital policy framework and whether additional policy initiatives should be considered.

Points of discussion

  • Drivers and challenges of further digitalisation: How is the digitalisation of the EU financial sector progressing?
  • What future opportunities can be leveraged? What are the main drivers and challenges shaping the EU’s capacity to further digitalise financial services?

  • What additional changes or refinements might be needed to unlock the full potential of technology in the financial sector and to mitigate related risks?
  • How do policy initiatives to support the digitalization of financial services in the EU compare to other jurisdictions?
